Hawker centres are the most celebrated dining places in Singapore. In just one building structure, we get to find a wide variety of dishes, a hybrid of cuisines, and all of them are priced affordably too! Not only do we locals visit hawker centres on a daily basis, this is also the best place to showcase our local cuisines to our foreign visitors (like in Crazy, Rich Asians)!
We have come up with this ultimate CBD hawker food guide, handpicking some of the popular hawker choices, and because they are all located in the CDB area, this means that regardless of where you stay on the island, these hawker centres are accessible to all!
1. Amoy Sarawak Kolo Mee

One of our favourite comfort food stalls at Amoy Street Food Centre! Affordably priced, generous portions, and somehow the springy noodles and flavourful chilli just makes us want to come back for more! A refreshing alternative to our local wanton mee, we do recommend that you give this Sarawak Kolo Mee a try!

We were all puzzled when we first saw this stall in Amoy Street Food Centre. What is this muffin stall doing in the middle row of the food centre? But it was only after giving it a try that we realised how these muffins work out to be the best sort of dessert after lunch, or the best option to be saved for the late afternoon tea break. Or sometimes, you just want to reward yourself with something sweet! No wonder there is no lack of customers streaming in just to choose from their wide variety of muffin choices!

The best way to complete a meal is to end it off with a sweet treat! Coupled with Singapore’s warm weather, we are always craving for something icy sweet. That is always why sweet treats like ice kachang and chendol always top our favourite desserts! If the basic chendol is not enough to satisfy your cravings, ask to add in more items to boost the flavours of your dessert!

8. Deli & Daint

Authentic European cuisine in a hawker centre?! The loveliest charm about dining in a hawker centre is that it includes all cuisines that you can think (or cannot think) of! For those watching your diet, go for the salad; and for those feeling a little hungry, go for their menu choices like spaghetti or chicken thigh meat. Don’t say that we did not warn you beforehand that the portions are huge too (think European servings)! Given that this stall has been around in the competitive Maxwell Food Centre for around 6 years, we think this speaks enough about the quality and taste of the food!

We secretly dig the Kuala Lumpur style chee cheong fun and were pleasantly surprised when we came across this stall selling something similar to what we just wanted! Try the different flavours that the stall offers, including laksa, curry, soy bean paste and sesame sauce, and you will be equally surprised to find that there are so many possibilities for chee cheong fun! We love it that the dish is also mixed with other ingredients like prawns and mushrooms, to give more flavours to the rice rolls. This is a stall that we will keep going back to satisfy our cravings!

Bringing its customers the Melbourne-style café experience in a hawker centre, we were all sold when we learnt that the stall uses only 100% Arabica beans sourced all around the world. Quality and great-tasting coffee with super affordable pricing, this stall is proving to be a strong competitor to the cafes around Maxwell Food Centre!

17. Koh Brother Pig’s Organ Soup
Photo Credit: Koh Brother Pig’s Organ Soup Facebook page
It was not easy to find a stall that does pig’s organ soup well, given that a lot of meticulous preparation is required to have this dish done well. But this stall surprised us all with their soup! And so, we later found out that their broth is brewed freshly daily from pig bones and mustard vegetables. Also, the stall made extra efforts to ensure that the intestines were cleaned thoroughly. All these preparations were not gone to waste, as we do think that the stall’s pig’s organ soup is one of the best we have had in Singapore!

Foodies have a long list of criteria when it comes to roasted meat items. The proportion of meat to fats, the temperature control during the roast, and the roasting timing will all affect what will be eventually presented to the customers. And yes, this stall has done it right! We were all in agreement that the juicy and tender meat made our tummies happy!
