You’re missing out big time if you have never stepped into Prodigal Cafe.
Located in the quiet Macpherson neighbourhood, the cafe’s sleek black and white minimalistic facade stood out from the older shophouses in the same area.
It was a rather peaceful afternoon when we went down to eat.
At
Their food menu consisted of a single page with 6 carefully curated dishes. While the selection was small, every dish we had ordered was good. It was also a refreshing change from the usual huge menus that many cafes offer (No more headaches from having too many options!)
We started off with their Mushroom Eggs & Toast – Portobello Mushroom with Cheese, Scrambled Eggs, Sourdough, Rockets and Red Pepper Hummus.
The sourdough was made in-house and was generously garnished with garlic. Soft, yet chewy and delightfully flavourful, it is no surprise that this light all-day brunch option is one of Prodigal’s best sellers.
However, what really impressed us in this dish were the scrambled eggs. This is the BEST scrambled eggs dish we have ever tried hands down. The eggs were creamy, silky smooth and not overly milky. We would love to have a portion of such perfect eggs every morning!
The next dish we tried was their Beef Sriracha Pasta. This dish wasn’t on the menu, but a limited-time only creation. In fact, one of the perks of having a small menu is that they are always constantly changing the dishes offered. Therefore, every visit to Prodigal Cafe will never be boring!

The beef was amazing too – it was smokey with a lightly charred crisp exterior and a tender middle. According to the cook, the beef is first cooked sous vide style, then torched and smoked with bourbon wood chips to create that signature intense flavour!
The third dish that we tried was their Philly Cheesesteak.
We got a crispy brioche bun stuffed with beef slices and cheese, lathered with whole grain mustard fermented with white wine and Roku Gin.
The mustard was tangy and refreshing, balancing out the richer cheese and beef combination.
The dish also came with a side of Prodigal’s signature Coffee Mayo fries – Fresh cut fries drizzled with Coffee Mayonnaise!
Now, this might sound like a weird combination to most, but surprisingly, the flavours played out really well and we polished off the ENTIRE plate in no time at all! Trust us, this is a dish you HAVE to try when you visit.
The fries used are also not mass factory produced frozen posers. No no, in fact, they are freshly made in-house with Prodigal’s house blend of special spices. Pairing the spiciness of the seasoning with the sweetness of the coffee mayo, this dish was a gastronomic delight. Move over the truffle fries craze, the new coffee kid on the block is here to take its throne!
The final dish we tried was their Chicken Stroganoff.
We got succulent pieces of chicken thigh, mushrooms and caramelised onions in delicious Stroganoff sauce. There were also 3 pieces of garlic butter toast to dip into that terrific stew (made with just a little whisky!).
We were once again impressed at how Prodigal was able to perfectly create such a flavourful dish without making it taste too
Don’t miss out on Prodigal Cafe’s great coffee selection as well! Depending on the season, their coffee bean sources vary. Their friendly barista was more than happy to share with us the origin of their current coffee bean stash (We had the ones from Costa Rica, with lovely hints of pineapple, yum) and patiently explained to us the methods used to make each drink.
