When we think of Dim Sum, places such as Crystal Jade and Peach Garden come to mind.
However, we’ve found a new gem called Black Society located at Vivocity selling
Sure, the dishes are a little on the pricey side. However, it is always a good idea to treat yourself from time to time AND this restaurant will definitely be worth your money.
When you first take a step in, you will be greeted by their sleek and classy monochromatic decor.
Gold trimmed lights are strung across the ceiling and tasteful black society themed wallpapers are plastered across the walls.
While we didn’t manage to capture a shot of the restaurant’s surrounding scenery, this place is decked out in floor to ceiling windows, giving you a gorgeous view of Sentosa.
You will have a clear, breathtaking view of the Sentosa boardwalk, cable cars and several glimpses of Universal Studios from your table.
But enough about that, the highlight of Black Society was obviously the Dim Sum.
The first item we tried was their Chili Crab Tart.
This was the dish we were most excited about because we haven’t heard or eaten one before. Egg tarts, cheese tarts, fruit tarts… we all had them.
But Chili Crab Tarts? We HAD to order a plate!
The tart was rather crumbly, breaking to pieces when we took a bite and making it a little messy to eat. However, the richness of the chili crab sauce was amazing and each tart came with a cute but meaty crab claw!
The next dish we had was their Signature Custard Bun.
We know, every dim sum place in Singapore has a Custard Bun.
So what was so SIGNATURE about this particular version?
It was the sauce that blew us all away.
You know, as food photographers, we spend so much time taking the perfect shots of food and this spans around an average of 15 minutes per dish. (We’re not kidding, or perhaps we’re just the slow ones…)
By the time we were finished with taking pictures of the other dishes, the Custard Bun had already been sitting on the table for a good half an hour.
“Damn. Surely the custard isn’t going to flow anymore,” We all thought. This is usually the case for many custard buns.
BUT BOY WERE WE WRONG and PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!
The custard lava filling was still FLOWY and OOZING out delightfully when we tried to pry the soft, fluffy buns apart!
Perhaps it was the composition of the lava, but it was perfect.
Liquid-y and warm, salty and buttery, you could taste the strong and rich salted egg crumbs within and it wasn’t some cheapskate lava paste with small traces of salted egg.
This was the REAL DEAL. We highly recommend and now see why it is one of their signature dishes.
Another signature item we tried were their Steamed Buns.
Again, we were wondering how special a “Steamed Bun” could be. We somehow were all picturing a plain, white bao with some magical filling.
Instead, what came were these cute mushroom looking buns!
The attention to detail was amazing – each bun really did look like a mushroom but was actually a really soft, fluffy bao.
Of course, when we bit into the bun, it came with generous mushroom fillings! We were a little disappointed it wasn’t filled with meat but the mushrooms were well marinated and delicious.
The next dim sum item we had were their Quail Eggs Siew Mai.
We can’t decide if they look cute or a little creepy as the poor birds stare at you with their “mascara smudged” crying faces.
That being said, this was one of our favourites! The prawn paste was very generous and the quail egg combination went really well with it. The dish also had a yummy beancurd skin base.
Of course, if you’re not into crying birds and eggs, they have the typical Siew Mai as well.
At such a premium restaurant, the Siew Mai quality was obviously way better than other places. Each Siew Mai came with a super fat prawn and was huger than normal a Siew Mai size.
The final dish we tried was their Carrot Dumping.
Black Society really has a knack for making super cute Dim Sum.
Each dumpling really looked like a cute, cartoon carrot with a small stalk of broccoli sticking out along with a bright orange fried exterior.
When we bit into the crispy dumpling skin, it revealed a minced meat filling that was incredibly flavourful and juicy!
The crispy dumpling and savoury meat filling complemented one another really well and we finished the 3 cute dumplings in no time at all.
In all, our experience with Black Society was a good one (though a tad expensive).
However, if it’s going to be a special occasion or if you’re craving for quality dim sum and a great atmosphere, don’t miss Black Society Restaurant out!
They have an extensive Dim Sum Menu (obviously, we could not try every single one of them even if we wanted to) so you don’t need to worry about finding something you’d like!
PLUS!
