Taiwanese Cuisine is a rare find in Singapore.

Therefore, we were pleased to find Xiang Xiang Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine at Bedok Point!

This humble eatery started out when the owner wanted to help her chef friend, who lacked an apprentice, pass down the Taiwanese heritage of cooking to the next generation. Motivated by her own fond memories of eating home cooked food by her grandmother in Taiwan, she decided to hone her culinary skills from him to bring Taiwanese Cuisine to our sunny island!

According to a short interview with this cheerful owner, whose name is Wendy, she uses only the best ingredients for her food so that people can truly taste the true wonders of the Taiwanese Cuisine.

First, we tried her Signature dish, the Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice.

This dish has a slight twist from the traditional way of cooking – where fatty pork is used to give a rich flavour.

Wendy, knowing that Singaporeans are now starting to become more health conscious, decided to strike a balance between the traditional cuisine and modern taste buds which can be seen in the composition of pork in her braised rice.

Xiang Xiang’s braised pork rice is made different by adding more lean meat to cater to the taste of health-conscious Singaporeans. 

Despite this, the meat was still flavourful and aromatic.

We enjoyed the braised pork so much that we really wished that each bowl came with a bigger portion of meat!

In addition, according to Wendy, she imports her rice from Taiwan and claims that this rice is the same one used at Din Tai Fung! 

The next dish we ate was the Mee Sua.

Again, the traditional Mee Sua from Taiwan usually comes with oysters. However, her version came with fried chicken cutlet instead.

This is because Wendy was not satisfied with the freshness of oyster in the market, so she innovated by substituting oysters for fried chicken cutlet.

We really REALLY liked the fried chicken cutlet and once again, wished that there were bigger chunks of the succulent and tender fried cutlet that we could dig into. In fact, we liked it so much we decided to order a bag each of the fried chicken cutlets a la carte before we left.

The fried cutlet added extra texture to the thick and starchy broth of rice vermicelli, and we wiped the bowl clean within minutes.

Finally, she wanted us to try a healthy side dish – Quinoa with Edamame.

This dish was really refreshing, and somewhat reminded us of a fruit salad. It is the perfect combination to order when eating the other fried and oily counterparts on the menu.

We also washed the entire meal down with a traditional Taiwanese drink – Wintermelon Tea with Tapioca pearls!

According to Wendy, a lot of Taiwanese people travel far and wide (such as from the west!) to try her food and some even said that her cooking tasted similar to that of their own grandmothers!
